The Sarnia Sting has suffered another big setback in its injury plagued season. Nail Yakupov will be out for an indefinite period after suffering a knee injury in overtime in last night’s gold medal game at the World Jr Hockey Championship. TSN is reporting on its website that the full extent of the injury won’t be known until Yakupov gets an MRI upon his return to Sarnia.

Wind Dispute
The lawyer representing the province’s Environment Ministry is expected to move for a dismissal of an Environmental Review Tribunal hearing on a proposed four-turbine wind farm in Brooke Alvinston today. MOE Lawyer Frederika Rotter didn’t hold back at a preliminary hearing in Wyoming last month. She labelled the Middlesex-Lambton Wind Action Group’s appeal as “a mockery” and “laughable.” If her motion is denied, an approximate two-week hearing would go ahead with most sessions hosted at the Brooke-Alvinston Municipal office. That would begin February 21st.

Times Up
Front Street between Exmouth and London will be closed from 9 to noon today. The Celebration of Lights Arch will be removed. Volunteers are need at Centennial Park tomorrow to assist in taking down all the lights. The turnout for the event was the best in years according to spokesperson Cathie Blake.

NCO Closing
Sarnia’s Mayor is confirming this afternoon (Thurs) that the NCO Call Centre on Modeland Road is closing in late March throwing hundreds of people out of work. The employees were reportedly informed of the closure today. This woman named Ann was among them. She says over 400 people are losing their jobs.

NCO, with headquarters in Horsham Pennsylvania, has 9 Canadian locations including Sarnia. The company has yet to comment on the Sarnia closure.

Trading Frenzy
The Sarnia Sting is busy making deals in advance of the January 10th trade deadline.
The Sting has acquired one of the elite players in all of junior hockey sending rookie forward Ryan Kujawinski to the Kingston Frontenaces for Ryan Spooner. The 19 yr old Spooner, a 2nd round pick of the Boston Bruins was invited to Team Canada’s Selection Camp but couldn’t attend after contracting mono. He has since been cleared by doctors to resume play.
In other deals announced today, forward Brett Ritchie is going to Niagara for 4 draft picks…a 2nd this year, a 2nd in 2013, a 2nd in 2014 and a 5th round pick in 2013…
The Sting is also shipping Jack Nevins, Taylor Carnevale and a 3rd round pick in 2016 to Kingston for overage forward Tyler J. Brown.
Both Spooner and Brown are expected to be in the Sting lineup tomorrow night in Erie.

Year Ends On High Note
2011 goes in the books as a busy year for the Sarnia Lambton Real Estate Board. President Donna Mathewson says 10 out of the 12 months recorded higher totals that the same month in 2010. December was also quite busy, with 18.4 million dollars in sales, a 10 year high. Matthewson says the mild weather definitely played a part.

Yearend sales for 2011 topped 328 million dollars and the year end average sale price for the county is 194 thousand 774 dollars.

Impaired Charges Spike
The number of impaired drivers caught over the holidays comes as bittersweet news to the OPP. Between November 25th and January 1st officers removed a total of 1203 impaired drivers from Ontario’s roadways but Sergeant Dave Rektor says the numbers are up. 652 were charged with impaired driving. Another 551 were issued immediate Warn Range Suspensions.

The Festive RIDE campaign last year saw over 300 fewer Impaired charges.

End Nearing?
For the first time in over a century asbestos mining remains at a halt in Canada. A new wrinkle came Wednesday with one of the country’s two remaining mines declaring bankruptcy. Sarnia Mayor Mike Bradley, a vocal opponent to the continued export of asbestos hopes its the end of an era.

Asbestos is considered dangerous enough to lead to the discontinuation of its use in Canada. The Quebec mining companies are holding out hope for new government and perhaps private financing.

Amber Ends
Police in Timmins have ended an Amber Alert for two young children issued early this morning.
1 year old Kara Johnson and 3 year old Aiden Johnson were located in the North Bay area.
Their father, 34 year old Zachary Johnson is in police custody.

A province-wide Amber Alert has been issued for two children abducted in the Timmins area.
Police are looking for 1 year old Kara Johnson and 3 year old Aiden Johnson. They believe the children are in the company of 34 year old Zachary Johnson. He’s described as white, 5″10, skinny with short curly dark brown hair. He has grey/green eyes with scruffy facial hair. Police have been unable to locate Johnson and the kids and say he could be headed for Ottawa, Nova Scotia or Saint Sauveur des Monts, Que.
