Possible Overcrowding at Jail

Possible Overcrowding at Jail

May 17, 2012 at 8:08 am

Sarnia-Lambton MPP Bob Bailey is demanding an immediate meeting with Community Safety and Correctional Services Minister Madeleine Meilleur.

The Union representing jail guards says at times the Sarnia Jail is at over 140% occupancy.

Bailey says 145 prisoners in a building designed for 100 creates safety issues not only for jail guards but for inmates as well.  He’s been told they’re being housed three to a cell and sleeping in unsecured areas such as common areas.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

The Sarnia jail is to close in 2014 with inmates transferred to a new jail now under construction in Windsor.
